What an IRS audit?
An IRS audit is a review/examination of the accounts of the organization or individual and financial information to ensure that the information is properly reported in accordance with the tax laws, to check that the number of reported tax is accurate. You may need IRS audit help, that’s why we suggest to give us a call as soon as you receive any notices from IRS.
Selecting a tax return for audit does not always indicate that an error has been made. Tax Returns are selected using various methods, including:
* Random selection and computer screening – sometimes returns are selected based solely on statistical formula.
* Document matching: When taxpayer records, such as W-2 or 1099 forms, does not match the data reported.
* Related examination – Returns can be selected for audit when they are related to the issues or transactions with other taxpayers, such as commercial partners or investors, whose returns are already selected for audit.
An audit can be done by mail or through personal interviews and reviewing the tax records of taxpayers. The interview may be at the IRS office (Office audit), taxpayer’s home, place of work or lawyer’s office. The IRS will tell you what necessary documents are needed.
If you are selected for an audit, you will be notified in any of these two ways:
- By mail.
In the case of a telephone conversation, the IRS will send a letter confirming the audit. E-mail notification is not used by the IRS.
